It will be known for certain on Tuesday if President Jacob Zumaof South Africa will remain President or be impeached, as South Africa’s National Assemblydebates on a motion to remove him as President.This comes after the constitutional court ruled last week that President Zuma went against the constitution by ignoring a ruling by the corruptionwatchdog body, the Public Protector, that he should repay some of the money spent on upgrading his private home.Since the ruling, opposition party leaders, ordinary South Africans and even an anti-apartheid activist jailed alongside Nelson Mandela have called on Zuma to step down.The ANC has a large majority in parliament so the motion is unlikely to pass.However, the opposition, Democratic Alliance, insists that all MPs should support the impeachment as they have previously pledged to uphold the constitution, which the President failed to do.The scandal is arguably the biggest yet to hit Zuma, who has fended off accusations of corruption, influence peddling and rape since before he took office in 2009.On Friday, the 73-year-old president gave a televised address to the nation in which he apologised and said he would payback some of the money, as ordered.He said that he never knowingly or deliberately set out to violate the constitution.
