Two female suicide bombers Tuesday detonated bombs at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Dikwa, Borno State, leaving 58 people dead and over 78 others injured.
Emergency response agency officials confirmed the death toll yesterday. National Emergency Management Agency Zonal Coordinator in North East, Mr. Mohammed Kanar, confirmed that some of the dead had been buried while the injured had been moved to medical facilities for adequate treatment. The incidents occurred when the IDPs queued up to collect their morning food at the camp which accommodates over 50, 000 people displaced by Boko Haram terrorism.
Three female suicide bombers had disguised as displaced persons to enter the camp where people from Dikwa, Ngala, Marte, Kala Balge, Bama and Mafa LGAs are being kept. Another bomber submitted herself to the authorities in the camp when she realized that her parents and siblings were among the IDPs.
She was heard telling soldiers in the camp that more suicide bombers and insurgents had been assigned to attack the camp, saying, “Expect more attacks on this camp soon”.
Chairman of State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Engineer Satomi Alhaji Ahmed, said though the attack took place early Tuesday, they got the report yesterday and raised a rescue team that brought 78 injured people to the Specialist Hospital and Umaru Shehu Hospital in Maiduguri.
About 100 Boko Haram insurgents were killed by soldiers last week and over 1,000 women and children abducted and kept by the insurgents from Boboshe, Garidawaji and Mamawari villages of Dikwa LGA and the rescued women were taken to the camp just attacked.
